Tradition

The Allens, our friends and quasi-cousins in West Virginia, have been stirring up apple butter in the same copper cauldron for 150 years. They recently produced 150 pints on a crisp Autumn day. And I helped.

Remember me when you do the "random" drawing (wink, wink). I didn't even say I thought all West Virginians were quasi cousins. I didn't say that because I have manners.

Very funny, AH. As the saying goes, "It's all relative in West Virginia."

Sue, you should share the taste test we did, comparing this batch of apple butter and last year's. You described the sutble variations as if it were wine.

Love ya!

Cousin Piper, I found out we're related. Where's my apple butter?

I didn't even think about how the "quasi-cousin" label could be interpreted. Leave it to AH. If she wins the apple butter, I'll save on postage.

Robert, I'd forgotten about the taste test. Last year's was a one-note apple butter with sweetness predominating. This year's batch is more complex - sweet, tangy and cinnamon spicy in each delicious bite. (I'll add this to the main blog too.)

I just spent a weekend in West Virginia watching leaves change. I brought a big stack of books with me, yet all I really did was watch the leaves. Sometimes that is enough! WVA is the best kept secret in the country.

In response to your comment on my blog: When I look at my life I think, cancer sucks. When I look at friends who have cancer and teenagers, I realize I don't know the half of it!

Thanks for the comment.

I went to see my oncologist yesterday, and it appears that my Leukemia may have returned. I'll know more in a couple of weeks.
