Is there a story in you?

Greetings, Cancer Banter readers! It's been a long time (thank heavens) since I've needed to post here in my role as Susan's "cancer correspondent."

With Smooky's permission, I'm posting today about a blog that may be of interest to writers who read Cancer Banter. The Rose City Sisters flash fiction blog presents short-short stories of up to 1,000 words. There's a catch: each story might have a connection to Pasadena. (In spite of our name, male writers are welcome.)

Susan took the fiction plunge last year and wrote "The Fourth Possibility," which starts:

Miranda thought the Japanese word sounded like what it meant—hot and humid. She escaped the mushiatsui life when she moved from sultry South Carolina to Southern California, but there was no escaping the steamy, suffocating heat of Sado Island, Japan, in August. (Read the rest here.)

My most recent story is about a woman with a very peculiar superpower.  This week we have a darkly comic Thanksgiving story—in list form. (Illustrated with a nearly obscene photo of a raw turducken wrapped in bacon.)

If you're a writer who's up for the challenge of telling a very short story, please read our story submission guidelines. If you know writers, share this blog post with them. The Rose City Sisters blog is accepting submissions.

I love publishing things on RCS. It's a great way to experiment with your writing and your voice. For this story, I wanted to play with form. Can a list be a full enough forum to flesh out a story, albeit a very short one? That's what got me thinking about this one. I hope people will hop over and read it, and I hope they will submit to RCS. It really is a great resource for writers.

Interesting. I would try it but I live way far away in Massachusetts. Could I still submit something if I created a Pasadena connection?

I sent a comment yesterday but I don't know what happened to it. I'd like to give it a try, but living here in Mass, I'd have to do research to come up with a Pasadena connection.

Also I've never written fiction!

I'm sorry it took me so long to publish the comments. I'm in West Virginia and only have internet access when I visit the library.

Ronnie, like you, I'm strictly a non-fiction writier and have always been intimidated at the thought of writing fiction. This less-than-1000-words format is a great way to try out your fiction chops. And, of course, the community of readers is very encouraging.

You don't need to live in Pasadena to give it a try. Just make a reference to anything in Pasadena. If you need Pasadena inspiration, you should surf on over to http://pasadenadailyphoto.blogspot.com

Oh wow! I love RCS. And if Margaret's got a new story, all the more reason for me to get over there now.

Then I read the comments and find you've mentioned my blog, Susan, you doll.

Ronni, you don't have to know your way around Pasadena. You could have a character from Pasadena, or have someone watching the Rose Parade on TV.

Thanks, Susan

I started by browsing on the blog, and I'm hooked. Sounds like such a beautiful city. I want to live there!

P.S. I think I have an idea, and I wonder if you could tell me the name of a friendly coffee shop with delicious coffee where a visitor might wander in and meet some good people.

Ronni—The Rose City Sisters blog has a list of Pasadena-related links, so you should be able to find something you can work into your story. It can even be buried. We've had contributors from as far away as India, so we're open to writers from all over.

Ronni, take a look at Jameson Brown or Jones.

Jones is better known but they're both great.

Thanks, everyone. I'm inspired and working on something to submit.

Petrea, I love your blog.

Susan and friends, can I come visit? I might never want to leave!

Ronni, we'd love to have you visit and, yes, you'd be tempted to stay. You'd fit right in with my wonderful group of writer and blogger friends.

So glad that you're going to try your hand at fiction! Can't wait to read your submission.

Thank you, Ronni! Come visit!

I went over to RCS and forgot to get back, til now. So far, I just read them, I don't write them. But you all need readers.

Thanks for your story, Ronni. You are now free to make up all the stories you want!
