Baby Banter

Head over heels in love with this new little man in my life

Funny how a few words can change your life.

Two and a half years ago, it was "You have cancer."

Six months ago, it was, "Mom, I'm pregnant."

Two days ago, it was, "My water broke."

39 hours later, it was, "WAAAA!" - the first sound from baby Joseph.

He arrived a month earlier than expected, but both he and his mommy are healthy and strong.

I, on the other hand, am tired enough to fall asleep standing up.

Congratulations, Susan!! I started to write you an e-mail within which I stated, "Save your energy; do not write back -- you'll need it for this handsome little guy!" He's beautiful, Susan! I'm so very happy for you all! Take care!

How wonderful! Congratulations. Get some rest - helping your daughter through the first few months will be both thrilling and tiring. New life - what is better than that?

Thank you all for your good wishes!

As for what I'll be called: I hate "grandma" (I'm way too young for that), so I may go for a variation of Baachan, Japanese for grandma. My friend Kumie calls her grandmother "Aachan." I like that. I just hope nobody says "God bless you."

Congratulations, Susan! The birth of a child is always life-affirming. And the birth of the child of your child is precious indeed.

One thing we know for sure: Little Joseph will be surrounded by good food, lots of laughter, and so much love!

Is this your first grandchild?

As grandparents we find spaces in our hearts where oodles and oodles of extra love has been waiting for moments such as this. Congratulations!

Susan, Here the name "Mims" or "Mimsy" has caught on for grandmothers. Two of my friends opted for that rather than grandma. So glad you are all doing well. I wonder if baby Joseph knows how lucky he is to have you for his Mommy's Mommy. :)

While I would love for science to find a cure for my cancer... I would be almost as happy if the figured out one of my life long dreams... How to become a grandmother without having to be a mom first. Grandma-hood seems divine. Love it up. I'm so happy for you.

Enjoy that little man - give him a cuddle from me. I miss delivering babies. Retired now as Midwife.. love your writing style of significant sentences. So right - you keep well that baby will help you. xx Marjorie
